The Hot Strip Mill at JFE Steel’s Keihin district stands as a
testament to cutting-edge steel production technology, boasting the
capability to manufacture Japan's widest hot-rolled steel strip.
Commissioned in 1979, the mill has been continually upgraded
throughout the years to maintain its competitive edge. Production
ceased in September 2023, leaving behind a legacy of excellence.
It features a Pair Cross Shift Mill for adaptive roll gap control to
optimize thickness and shape. A key enhancement was the integration of
a Sizing Press in 2009, which allows for variable strip widths while
using slabs of constant width. This not only increases the
productivity of the slab caster and reheating furnace upstream but
also expands the range of products that can be manufactured
efficiently.
Capable of rolling slabs measuring up to 2,300 mm in width, with
thicknesses ranging from 160 to 250 mm, the Keihin HSM has an annual
production capacity of approx. 4,000,000 tons. The mill processed
low-carbon steel into a variety of products, from thin sheets for
automotive bodies to thicker plates for line pipe applications.
