English Sunbeam 4HP 550cc model with belt drive.
In WWI, many Sunbeams were delivered to Russia and other countries,
but the largest customer was the British Royal Naval Air Service, the
predecessor of the British Air Force. These were all 500cc with chain
drive.
France ordered 1000 motorcycles but with a 550cc engine and with belt
drive. This is now a very rare sight. In the meantime, 9 of these
motorcycles are known to the Marston Sunbeam Register, with this one
10 because until now it was unknown because it had been in a private
collection in France for many years.
Motorcycle is an old restoration that has now had a full check and
overhaul and is in perfect running S6224454 condition.
Engine and gearbox have been overhauled and start and run nicely.
This motorcycle has the lowest known engine number.
Production started in 1916 to 1918. You can also see the letters GS
which passes on Generale Service, the French for military service.
